Today is
Pancake Day in the UK, Ireland and some Commonwealth nations. Also known as 'Shrove Tuesday', Pancake Day is always on the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of
Lent. During the 40 days of Lent, Christians traditionally
fast (avoid eating rich foods) for 40 days, so Pancake Day is a great opportunity to use up eggs, milk and butter. In France, the USA and some other countries, Pancake Day is called
Mardi Gras, which means 'fat Tuesday'.
